As part of efforts to address building collapse in Nigeria, BUA Cement, a subsidiary of BUA Group has enlightened block and concrete makers on how to apply the right mix of Cement with other components to ensure only standard blocks and concretes are produced. The one-day workshop tagged, “Optimizing Cement Usage to Achieve Better Quality and Yield of Blocks” was organized in collaboration with the Modern Skills Training Centre of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) in Port Harcourt. Abdulsamad Rabiu, the Executive Chairman/CEO of BUA Group, has urged the FG to replicate its policies in the Cement and Sugar Industries in the Steel Industry. Speaking at the Opening Plenary of the Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on Monday, Abdulsamad Rabiu who recalled that 15 years ago Nigeria was faced with a nightmare when it only produced 4 million tonnes of cement, said Government’s reforms and BUA’s involvement in the cement industry had raised the stake to over 40 million metric tonnes thereby saving the country over USD$4 billion annually. Rabiu also bemoaned the continuous import of steel when the raw materials are readily available in the country and stated that USD$3 billion can be saved annually if government replicates the policies in the Cement and Sugar industries in the Steel industry. The story that the police has declared Yusuf Binji, the managing Director of BUA’s Obu Cement Company wanted over an alleged attack on the convoy of Governor Godwin Obaseki is absolutely false after all. Force Police Public Relations Officer Jimoh Moshood stated unequivocally that there had been no such directive from the police at the sate or federal command. This development carpets statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media to the Edo state government, Crusoe Osagie alleging that the police issued an arrest wararnt for the arrest of the BUA Cement Managing Director. The police rebutal absolves Binji of complicity in the alleged attack Governor Obaseki – and other claims by the state Government.

Cement manufacturer, BUA has reacted to the arrest of its employees on the orders of the Edo state Governor Godwin Obaseki. The statement issued reads We have been made aware that today, the Edo State Governor, in the company of some security operatives, visited one of our mining sites in Obu-Okpella, Edo State to effect a gestapo-style forceful shutdown of that mine despite a subsisting court pronouncement that the Mine be allowed to operate. Upon reaching that mining site and not meeting any personnel or equipment, two BUA Cement employees were invited to the mining site to receive the Governor. We later learnt that these employees were arrested upon arrival on the orders of the Governor and taken away for no just reason. As it stands, we do not know why they were arrested but have requested our lawyers to secure their unconditional release immediately as these employees are innocent and have no knowledge of why they were being arrested. Leaders of Okpella, the Community where the mines at the centre of a raging ownership dispute between cement manufacturers Dangote and BUA is located have spoken out on the lingering crisis. They disclosed the entire community is not happy with how Dangote instigated the shut down of the Mines being operated by BUA. The community leaders claim the mines have directly and indirectly provided 10,000 jobs for people of the community in Estako East local government of Edo. The jobs are currently under threats and the leaders fear the shutdown would spiral into an increase in the crime rates of the area. “We heard of the alleged closing down of the Obu mines in Okpella, Edo State by the Governor of Edo State. Whilst this remains in the territory of hearsay, our position on this matter remains very clear. Just as the Edo state Government said in its statement, this is an issue no state government has jurisdiction over as it is a Federal Issue. It is however interesting to note that the mine under contention, ML2541, has been claimed repeatedly by the Ministry of Mines and Dangote to be in Okene, Kogi state. Thus, we are curious and are at great loss as to why the Governor of Edo State is closing down a mine in Edo State which has been claimed by the other parties involved to be outside his state in Okene, Kogi State and which the purported ML2541 license also states clearly.
